Postpartum Haemorrhage: A Life-Threatening Obstetric Emergency

Postpartum haemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Although definitions may vary, blood loss greater than 500ml after birth is considered abnormal — especially when accompanied by signs and symptoms of hypovolaemic shock.

Critical Steps for Emergency Management in Maternal Care for Postpartum Haemorrhage

Early recognition and immediate treatment are critical to improving outcomes for both mother and baby.

Initial emergency management may include:

🩸 Uterine massage and compression

🩸 Establishing large-bore IV access

🩸 Administration of Oxytocin

🩸 Fluid resuscitation to maintain adequate perfusion

🩸 Early use of Tranexamic Acid

🩸 Consider placement of a non-pneumatic anti-shock garment

Rapid intervention, coordinated teamwork, and timely transport to an appropriate facility can be lifesaving.
